CIAG Infrastructure Grant Program

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Failure to follow these guidelines will result in rejection of your application.
  • No more than two projects are likely to be funded in 2008.
  • Only CIAG Faculty may apply for these grants.

Purpose

The overall goal of this program is to promote collaboration and enhance research competitiveness in genomic areas that meet College of Agriculture and Life Sciences/ Experiment Station mission-oriented research goals.  Grants will provide funding for non personnel infrastructure needs for research conducted by CIAG Faculty.  Emphasis will be on providing funds for infrastructure and genomic resources that are crucial for the longer-term competitiveness of research in animal genomics but that, because of their long-term nature, are difficult to finance from other sources.  Examples of research needs that will be funded are the purchase of equipment, development of genomic data bases, development and maintenance of genetic resources, including animal lines and materials and hourly labor to maintain the lines.  It is expected that the proposed equipment/infrastructure has the potential to enhance newly developed or ongoing research programs and contribute to innovative and significant research.

Due to the source of this funding, the equipment/genomic resources must support genomics research that reflects the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences/Experiment Station's mission-oriented approach toward directed research.  The proposal must clearly articulate a specific outcome and that benefits animal agriculture and/or shows a link between animal and human health.  In addition, the research should reflect CIAG's efforts to encourage collaboration among faculty, enhance research competitiveness, and promote cutting edge research.

Eligibility

Faculty members who are affiliated with CIAG.

Use of Funds

  1. Grant funds may be used only for research-related infrastructure, such as equipment, establishment and maintenance of genomic resources, and other long-lasting research needs.
  2. The maximum award is $8,000 per year per grant and requires a 25% match of the total requested, from non-CIAG sources.  Matching funds may include personnel costs involved in maintaining genomic resources
  3. All grant funds must be expended by June 30, 2009:  no extensions will be permitted.

Content of Application

  1. Cover Page - PDF Format or Word Format
  2. Description of Infrastructure Resources Requested including detailed costs of resources requested and source(s) of the required matching funds.  For animal lines, allowable costs are:  animal care, DNA and genotyping, phenotyping and equipment to house animals.
  3. Plan for utilization of Infrastructure Resources including the relationship and integration of the proposed resources to existing resources (including departmental and institutional resource); capability of faculty and staff involved to manage and utilize the proposed resources; adequacy of the institutional commitment to assist in obtaining, managing, and maintaining the proposed resources; and availability of space for equipment/resources.
  4. Research statement clearly articulating how the specific outcome of the research supported by this equipment/resources will benefit animal agriculture and/or show a link between animal and human health; and a list of current and/or future projects to be supported by these and funding sources.
  5. Biographical Sketch:  one for each investigator; two page maximum, single-spaced.  Biographical sketches should include recent publications (10 maximum) and recent funding sources (last 3 years).
  6. Budget:  no indirect costs; one page maximum (REMINDER:  $8,000 maximum).  Provide a budget justification on the budget page or on a separate page.  A match equal to 25% of the requested funding must be described.
  7. NO GOLDSHEET IS REQUIRED.  No indirect costs should be shown for CIAG Research Support grants.

(NOTE:  Description, Plan, and Research Statement should be no more than 3 pages in length, 12 point font with 1 inch margins).
